Expressionism is a cultural movement initially in poetry and painting
It is originating in Germany at the start of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world under an utterly subjective perspective, violently distorting it to obtain an emotional effect and vividly transmit personal moods and ideas.
Expressionist artists sought to express the meaning of "being alive" and emotional experience rather than physical reality.

Expressionist art is a style that originated in Germany in the early 20th century.
A group of German artists used this term to describe their art and its aesthetic principles. The original group of German expressionist painters was known as "The Bridge," and they asserted that the value of one's emotional experience was a measure of one's moral and artistic values. Expressionists were also known at this time for opposing the traditional teachings of art.
The subjects of expressionist works were frequently distorted/ exaggerate
Landmarks of this movement were:
Violent colors and exaggerated lines that helped contain intense emotional expression.
Application of formal elements is vivid, jarring, violent, or dynamic.
Expressionist were trying to pinpoint the expression of inner experience rather than solely realistic portrayal, seeking to depict not objective reality but the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in them.
